At Ausconnex, we are committed to delivering large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across Greater Western Sydney to support the increasing integration of renewable energy into the electricity network.
Advanced BESS technology captures, stores, and distributes energy from both renewable and non-renewable sources, ensuring a safe and reliable power supply for our communities.
Ausconnex is planning to develop 12 high-voltage and medium-voltage BESS located adjacent to existing electricity substations across five local government regions. The four high-voltage BESS sites will each have a capacity to supply up to 100 megawatts of power and the ability to store up to 200MWh of energy. Meanwhile, the eight medium-voltage BESS sites will each have a capacity to supply up to 5 megawatts and store 10MWh of energy, designed specifically to meet the growing energy demands of the region.
The HV BESS and MV BESS proposals will go through different planning approvals with the HV BESS requiring NSW Government approval, while the MV BESS will follow a Development Assessment (DA) with the relevant council and be determined by the Sydney Western City Planning Panel.
HV BESS proposed sites:
- Penrith
- Baulkham Hills
- Guildford West
- Springhill
MV BESS proposed sites:
- Seven Hills
- Emu Plains
- Maldon
- South Marsden Park
- Penrith
- Cawdor
- North Leppington
- Cranebrook
Penrith HV and MV BESS proposed location
Planning for both the HV and MV BESS at the Penrith site has already begun, with an expected completion date of mid-2025. Upon receiving planning approvals, construction is slated to commence in 2026.
For more detailed information, please refer to our Penrith BESS newsletter. As the project advances, we will release newsletters for each of the remaining sites to keep you informed.
Ausconnex is committed to supporting the NSW Government’s objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By integrating BESS technology, we are providing safe, reliable, and renewable power.
As this project continues to move forward, we are committed to keeping our community informed and involved. We will provide regular updates and welcome feedback from community members and stakeholders. In late 2025, following the submission and public display of the Environmental Impact Statement, there will be an opportunity for everyone to share their feedback.
